The School of Engineering drives science and innovation in industrial and built environment technologies. Aalto Design Factory is a pioneering hub for product development education, research and practice. Together with our stakeholders, we explore novel formats and insights on development collaboration and interdisciplinary education for innovation. Located in Espoo, Finland, we are part of Aalto University and the Design Factory Global Network.

Aalto Design Factory (ADF) is now looking for an Operations Engineer for our Design Factory Machine Shop and related prototyping facilities for a fulltime 2-year fixed-term contract.

Your Role And Responsibilities
  • Everyday management and maintenance of the workshops and equipment at the Machine shop and the other workshop spaces related to it.
  • Serving as an expert for manufacturing technology and prototype building for different stakeholders at the Design Factory.
  • Organizing workshops and developing teaching materials, as well as instructing students in course assignments, projects and theses related to prototyping.
  • Executing demanding machining tasks.
  • Developing the prototyping functions and education related to it in collaboration with the Head of Operations and Director of the Design Factory.
  • Managing equipment acquisitions and development and maintenance of research tools and methods, in collaboration with other staff.
  • Alongside the facility manager and ADF Head of Operations, being responsible for developing occupational safety and related training and running training sessions.
Your Experience And Ambitions
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field.
  • Experience in product development and/or prototyping.
  • Experience in interacting with students - listening, advising, encouraging, and assisting them.
  • Excellent skills in computer-aided manufacturing (3D modeling, CNC routing and operation) are essential.
  • Up-to-date theoretical knowledge in manufacturing technologies.
  • Willingness, readiness, and ability to continuously learn new skills.
  • Strong social and cultural skills, readiness for supervisory duties, and willingness to travel if needed.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English and Finnish, with fluency in Swedish considered a benefit but not necessary.
  • Experience at the Design Factory, Design Factory Global Network or other interdisciplinary learning hubs (as a staff member, researcher, student, etc.) can be considered an advantage, so make sure to bring up such experience in your cover letter.
