Professor or Associate Professor in Sustainability and Business Administration

Hanken School of Economics is one of the leading business schools in the Nordic countries. It is located in Finland, with campuses in Helsinki and Vaasa. Hanken offers a range of B.Sc., M.Sc., EMBA, PhD, and Executive Development programmes taught mainly in English and Swedish. Hanken has 2,725 Bachelor and Masters students, and 118 Doctoral students. The School has close ties to the business community and an active alumni network with over 13,800 alumni working in more than 70 countries. The School is accredited by AACSB, AMBA, and EQUIS. The mission of Hanken is to create new knowledge and educate responsible professionals for the global economy and changing society. The Masters programme was ranked 57 in the Masters in Management by Financial Times in 2024. Hanken is also recognized for its research quality, its international orientation, and its focus on sustainability.

Hanken is looking to strengthen its research and teaching related to sustainability and business administration. We are seeking an expert who will play an important role in achieving this goal. The professorship in Sustainability and Business Administration is open at the levels of professor and associate professor. The position will be filled from August 1, 2025 (or as agreed). The position is based at the Helsinki campus. The professorship will be allocated to the subject within Hanken that fits best with the profile of the candidate, such as accounting, entrepreneurship, management and organization, marketing, or supply chain management and social responsibility.

Requirements

The applicants will be reviewed based on their research, teaching, institutional service, and societal impact. The role requires a doctoral degree.

Applicants for the associate professor level are expected to have demonstrated internationally high levels of research within the scientific field of the position, high levels in teaching, and contributed through institutional service and societal impact. The employment contract for an Associate Professor is permanent with the possibility to advance to full Professor in accordance with Hanken's tenure track rules.

Applicants for full professor can demonstrate that they are internationally recognised researchers with continued internationally high levels of research within the scientific field of the position. A professor is also expected to demonstrate continued high levels in teaching, institutional service, and societal impact.

Research is the most important of the four different qualification areas followed by teaching, and then service and societal impact. Evaluation of candidates shall be made using a holistic consideration of all submitted materials.

Being a stand-alone business school with strong Nordic roots, Hanken offers high-quality degree programmes in Swedish and English. Applicants are required to have fluent command of English; knowledge of Swedish is considered a merit. Hanken supports its faculty in learning the Swedish language, which serves as the administrative language of the business school.

Academic staff at Hanken are expected to carry out and supervise scientific research, provide high-quality academic teaching, closely follow the advances of their field, and participate in service to Hanken, the academic community, and society.

The annual working time, according to the collective agreement, is 1612 hours. Hanken offers relocation support for tenure track professors coming from outside Finland and expects full-time academic employees to reside and work in Finland. During the academic year, it is expected that a minimum average of three days per week is spent at the office in Helsinki to actively contribute to the research and teaching environment. Teaching tasks are allocated based on the curriculum needs of the subject and by considering applicants' expertise.

Salary

The salary is based on the university salary system in Finland (includes employee healthcare as well as pension and holiday contributions); however, the exact salary level depends on the recruited individual's qualifications and performance. In addition to the salary, the Hanken support foundation grants faculty members substantial publication awards for high-quality publications, including individual research budgets, which is currently set as 4000 euros/year for the first two years of employment.

For additional information, please contact Rector Ingmar Björkman at ingmar.bjorkman@hanken.fi. In the case of questions relating to the recruitment process, please contact HR Director Elina Stadigh at elina.stadigh@hanken.fi.

Associate and Full Professor appointments include external evaluations.
