The Faculty of Science invites applications for a permanent full-time position of Laboratory Engineer in Isotope Mass Spectrometry at the geophysical, environmental and mineralogical laboratories (HelLabs) of the Department of Geosciences and Geography, University of Helsinki starting September 2025.

About the position

The successful applicant will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, method development and management of a new state-of-the-art isotope laboratory. The laboratory facility is finished in 2025 and will host a latest-model TIMS (thermal ionization mass spectrometer) and a Class ISO-3 metal-free clean laboratory. The primary users of the facility are researchers and graduate students at the University of Helsinki and governmental research organizations within the fields of geo-, environmental and food sciences, chemistry, physics, medicine, and archaeology. The appointee will also guide students enrolled in MSc degree and Doctoral programs in the isotope laboratory.

We are looking for

We expect the applicant to have comprehensive knowledge and experience with mass spectrometry, be able to learn independently, and foster an interest in analytical method development. The applicant should have hands-on experience in the operation of mass spectrometers.

Experience with clean laboratory preparation practices of geological and/or environmental samples, a background in mass spectrometry (preferably TIMS) and electrical engineering are considered advantages. Experience in operating and maintaining TIMS, experience in isotope dilution methods, and experience in developing and certifying reference materials are desirable.

The appointee should hold either an MSc or equivalent or a PhD degree in a relevant scientific discipline.

The appointee should have excellent communication skills and be keen to support and train laboratory users.

The successful candidate must be fluent in English, both oral and written. Language skills in Finnish and Swedish are considered a merit. A successful applicant without Finnish skills is expected to enrol in staff language courses provided by the university to develop their skills up to the CEFR level B2 within 5 years.

Special requirements for the position

EU regulations on export control are applicable to this position. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.
