We are looking for a R&D Team Lead, Shaft Line at ABB Oy, Marine and Ports in Vuosaari, Helsinki.

In this position, you will be working in our Marine Propulsion technology department. One of your main responsibilities will be leading a team of Research and Development (R&D) professionals, supporting them in achieving the agreed R&D targets. You will be coaching and developing the team, helping to manage shaft line technologies, and Intellectual Property (IP) while working in close co-operation with internal and external stakeholders.

Azipod propulsion is a gearless steerable propulsion system where the electric drive motor is in a submerged pod outside the ship hull. Azipod units can rotate 360 degrees to increase maneuverability and operating efficiency. This position reports to Technology Manager.

Your role and responsibilities:
  1. Leading the development of dedicated Azipod technology R&D initiatives from concepting to completion, ensuring adherence to timelines, budget, and quality standards.
  2. Supporting in creation and implementation of new technology and product roadmaps, driving and fostering a culture of innovation within the team.
  3. Managing and motivating assigned internal and external resources, applying ABB's HR policies; talent management through coaching, performance feedback and providing development and career opportunities for team members.
  4. Planning capacity, people and resources for R&D projects; allocating work/tasks to team members and overseeing workload within the team.
  5. Developing and acquiring needed competencies for the development of future products and systems.
  6. Overseeing efficient, timely and superior quality project execution and ensuring financial and content supervision over projects.
  7. Supporting R&D project managers in developing project budgets and ensuring efficient use of funds.
Qualifications for the role:
  1. M.Sc. or B.Sc. degree in an appropriate field of engineering.
  2. A collaborative, solutions-oriented approach with strong communication skills; good English language skills are mandatory in the position.
  3. Strong experience working in R&D in marine industry is expected.
  4. Experience managing R&D projects, including planning, budgeting, and follow-up is expected.
  5. Strong problem-solving skills.
  6. Experience in leading technical experts is appreciated.
  7. Occasional traveling is required in this role, to meet customers and suppliers.
