OWA Europe Corporate Strategy Lead, Animal Protection Nonprofit
3 days ago
WHO WE ARE
The Humane League (THL) is a global nonprofit ending the abuse of animals raised for food. THL fosters a high-energy culture of teamwork and mission-driven problem solving, and we have earned recognition as Top Charity from Animal Charity Evaluators for all of their rating periods. Over the past few years, we've grown to a staff of 100+ talented individuals dispersed across the country and around the world. At The Humane League (THL), how animals are treated in the food system is at the forefront of our everyday work. As such, many of our staff are vegan by personal choice, and all of our THL-hosted events offer fully vegan menus. We welcome all mission-aligned candidates to apply, no matter where you are in your journey to end the abuse of animals raised for food.
YOUR OPPORTUNITY
The Open Wing Alliance (OWA), a program of The Humane League, is a global coalition of approximately 90 animal protection organizations across 70+ countries united in a common goal: to end the abuse of chickens worldwide. For the past several years, we have focused our efforts in Europe on eliminating battery cages and increasing uptake of the European Chicken Commitment (ECC) by securing corporate commitments from major retailers, restaurants, and manufacturers. OWA groups share tactics and resources to secure as many wins for animals as possible, specializing in institutional campaigning that can be tailored to our members' unique circumstances and challenges.
As the OWA Europe Corporate Strategy Lead, you will serve as a key subject matter expert on corporate campaigning and corporate outreach for the OWA in Europe. You'll be responsible for building relationships with OWA member groups and providing advice, coaching, and training in order to build campaign knowledge and skills across the animal protection movement in Europe. We want you because you are an experienced campaigner and strategic thinker with excellent interpersonal skills. You are excited about collaborating with organizations across Europe to maximize impact for animals, and you have a deep determination to remove the worst forms of animal suffering from companies' supply chains. This position reports directly to the Director of the Open Wing Alliance.
This is a full-time, remote position. This position requires domestic and international travel, equivalent to 6-10 trips per year, and requires a valid, up-to-date passport. This position can be based in the United Kingdom, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, or Spain. The successful candidate must be authorized to work in one of these countries. To enable collaboration with other global team members, this role requires hours outside of 9am-5pm at least two working days per week. More details can be provided at the interview stage.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide OWA member groups in Europe with strategic guidance and direction for regional corporate campaign strategies, and collaborate with groups to troubleshoot issues.
Co-create strategies with OWA groups and serve as a coach, building their independence over time. Support groups in adapting campaign tactics to different local and regional contexts.
Lead in-person and virtual trainings for OWA groups on corporate campaigning and corporate outreach.
Build strong relationships and trust with OWA groups, alongside a reputation as a sharp strategic thinker and strategist.
Develop resources and training materials in order to build resilience, empowerment, and autonomy in the OWA.

Ability to identify opportunities, innovate new tactics, evaluate options and potential outcomes, and anticipate obstacles. Escalates issues to senior leaders when necessary, seeking additional perspectives and expertise to guide complex, often high-stakes decisions.
Initiative, Proactivity, and Adaptability: Actively seeks creative solutions to address challenges. Adapts readily when faced with setbacks, viewing obstacles as opportunities for innovation. Ability to work with a great deal of independence and a strong sense of ownership over goals.
Verbal and Written Communication: Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats with stakeholders across a variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Adapts communication style to suit different audiences' needs. Ability to lead successful training sessions, acting as a subject matter expert and explaining ideas clearly and concisely.

At The Humane League, we believe in maintaining a fair and nondiscriminatory work environment for all employees. As part of our commitment to transparency, we have implemented a job architecture framework, which levels all of our roles according to size and complexity, as well as a compensation step system, which allows us to determine fair salaries for all staff. We also look at market data for each country that we operate in, to allow us to create specific salary bands per country. This work is time consuming and involves a cost to THL. Therefore, when expanding into a country for the first time, we only undertake this work towards the end of the recruitment process, when we know where our ideal candidate is based. In addition, we have adopted a no negotiation policy for salaries. To determine a job's level, we carefully consider a variety of factors, including a job's size and complexity, required experience, knowledge, and/or skills, internal comparability, and market data. Candidates whose experience places them at step 5 or above of their job level within our compensation structure will be awarded a "senior" title designation. These practices are aligned with our organizational values and will help us ensure we maintain clear, consistent, and transparent HR processes.
