Trainee for Social Media Communications

The University of Helsinki International trainee programme is open to all international students enrolled in a University of Helsinki master's programme.

We are now looking for a TRAINEE for a gambling research project in the Centre for Research on Addiction, Control and Governance.

The duration of a traineeship is from 1 September to 31 December 2025 (four months) of part-time (55%) work, leaving time for studies as well. The salary of a trainee is €825 per month for a part-time (55%) trainee.

About The Position

The Centre for Research on Addiction, Control and Governance is a research centre at the Faculty of Social Sciences, discipline of sociology. We study addictions from a sociological perspective, focusing on four research areas:

  • Addiction: Behaviours, concepts and theories
  • Legal control and policies of gambling, alcohol and drugs
  • Commercial operators and marketing of alcohol and gambling products
  • The welfare state and its social and healthcare systems

The trainee will be working in one of our several interesting and ongoing gambling-related projects. Depending on the preferences and skills of the trainee, they will focus on one research area and produce a report of the results. The report can be further developed into a published research article with the support of CEACG researchers. The trainee will gain experience from quantitative or qualitative research methods, research writing process, and gambling research topics. Depending on the interests of the trainee, they can also contribute to the social media and other communications of the research centre, administrative tasks, etc.

Possible research projects in which the trainee can take part:
  • Quantitative research project: If you are interested in developing your quantitative research skills, we have interesting datasets on treatment-seekers or a population-level sample. Your research project can focus on analyzing these datasets from the perspective of gambling consumption and gambling-related harms.
  • Qualitative research project: If you are interested in conducting qualitative research, you could take part in an international comparative project related to gambling advertising and its regulation in different countries. The aim of this project is to produce policy advice to the Finnish gambling regulation reform.
The person we are looking for

We are looking for someone with the following preferred qualities:

  • Skills in quantitative methods, and interest in developing them further
  • Skills in different languages in case of mainly qualitative research background
  • Interest in research and publishing research results
  • Interest in sociology of addictions, specifically questions related to gambling
  • Good skills in writing academic English

We would prefer a trainee with skills and an interest in quantitative methods. However, it is also possible to work with qualitative methods in this traineeship. In this case, we would particularly appreciate linguistic skills besides English. We are looking for a student in social sciences, but we would give precedence to anyone interested in addiction and gambling-related themes. Good communication skills and an ability to work at the city centre campus are appreciated.
