PS Fellow: Professor, Assistant or Associate Professor in Computer Science (especially Intelligent Computing)

The JYU is a nationally and internationally significant research university and an expert on education that focuses on human and natural sciences.

The Faculty of Information Technology is seeking to recruit a Professor or Assistant/Associate Professor (tenure track) in Computer Science (especially Intelligent Computing) starting on August 1, 2025, or as soon as possible after that. The Professor position is valid until further notice. The position of an Assistant Professor is for a fixed term of three to five years, and the position of an Associate Professor is for a fixed term of five years (according to the tenure track model at the university of Jyväskylä). After each fixed-term assignment, there will be an evaluation procedure to assess the qualifications for promotion to the next level (Associate/Professor). The tenure track aims to progress to a permanent professorship.

In recent years and decades, AI as a discipline has developed constantly, producing breakthroughs in technologies and products and businesses based on the new capabilities. Intelligent computing covers a variety of aspects of AI and AI models: contemporary AI model architectures and construction strategies (e.g. deep learning, reinforcement learning, transfer learning, semi-supervised and unsupervised learning), efficient implementation of AI models (hardware aspects, computational algorithms, processing of data sets) and model properties that enable rational and responsible deployment (explainability, causal reasoning).

The faculty aims to strengthen the research and degree education in AI High-Performance Computing with this recruitment. The aim of the professorship is a deep and long-term cooperation with the Foundation PS and the ELLIS Institute Finland to profile Finland as a leading country in AI research and its application. The person selected for this professorship participates and presents their research and its impact at a non-profit conference organised by Foundation PS at least once a year.

Who we are looking for

The new (Assistant/Associate) Professor (PS Fellow) is expected to support the faculty's strategy with high-quality scientific research in collaboration with faculty staff and stakeholders, to promote and support leading technology research, and to contribute to the growth of Finland's ecosystem of AI capabilities, knowledge and expertise, as well as its capacity to commercialise new technologies with significant positive societal impact in accordance with the University Act. The career stage of the recruit will determine the level of responsibility and requirements for other tasks.

You are the person we are looking for if your research is strongly linked to method development of AI and computational intelligence. Your research may focus on the computational and algorithmic aspects of AI either in the large (model architectures, learning strategies) or in the small (efficient implementation and related computational aspects). Or it aims to trustworthiness of the AI models. It is considered an advantage for the applicant to show a plan for how to advance the faculty's research related to AI and Data Science. Regardless of career stage, the recruited person is expected to have the capacity and involvement in stakeholder collaboration and development.

In addition to research, the position of Assistant/Associate Professor includes teaching and doctoral training. The Assistant/Associate Professor supervises undergraduate students, Doctoral Researchers and Postdoctoral Researchers according to their career path. The Assistant/Associate Professor is also involved in the continuous development of teaching and other development and administrative tasks. The Assistant/Associate Professor is expected to contribute to research projects in their field and to acquire funding for the research team.

The Assistant/Associate Professor is required to have an applicable doctoral degree, an excellent record of international scientific research and publications, international networking, teaching and, in particular at the Associate level, funding and thesis supervision. This will be assessed based on the level of the tenure track career model applied for. In addition to research, the Professor's duties include teaching and doctoral training. The Professor supervises undergraduate students, Doctoral Researchers, and Postdoctoral Researchers. Responsibilities also include the continuous development of teaching and participation in other development and administrative activities. The recruited person is expected to contribute to the responsibility for research projects in their field and for the research team's funding. They are also expected to participate in social interactions in their area of expertise.

The Professor is required to have an applicable doctoral degree, a high level of scientific excellence and publication record, extensive experience in teaching, supervising Doctoral Researchers and Postdoctoral Researchers, managing research activities, and a strong track record of national and international cooperation in their field of research and in obtaining research funding.

The duties and qualification requirements of an Assistant/Associate Professor and Professor are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. Candidates should have an excellent record of conducting and publishing scientific research, establishing international networks, acquiring external funding, and teaching. The qualification requirements should be met before the closing time of this call. A trial period of six months will be used at the beginning of employment.

JYU's starting grant for new tenure track professors enables a smooth start. The start-up funding is up to 60,000 euros. Applications will be assessed taking into account the need for start-up funding to ensure the effective launch of the research activity, which must be justified in the application. We will also support your progress through mentoring, training and other support activities needed. Career path progression is based on an overall assessment of a person's progress.
