We are now looking for two (Senior) Research Technicians to join our Biomaterial piloting team in Bioruukki, Espoo, in one-year fixed-term positions.
As a Research Technician or Senior Research Technician, you will play a key role in carrying out experimental work and supporting practical tasks that enable successful research and piloting projects. This is a hands-on role where you prepare, run and monitor experiments, operate laboratory and pilot-scale equipment, and assist in setting up and modifying test systems in close collaboration with researchers and technical experts. Your work ensures smooth and safe piloting operations, reliable results and the development of innovative, sustainable biomaterial processes.
Our team works in VTT's biomaterials and biomass processing piloting environments, where new biobased solutions are developed, scaled, and validated together with research partners and industry. At Bioruukki, our work focuses on biomass processing and fractionation (e.g. pulping and dissolution), biomaterials such as films and textiles, and the analyses supporting this work. The team consists of specialists who collaborate closely across VTT's research areas.
As (Senior) Research Technician, you will:- Prepare, run and monitor experiments in laboratory and pilot-scale environments.
- Operate, adjust and maintain laboratory and pilot equipment safely and reliably.
- Assist in setting up and modifying test setups and experimental systems together with researchers.
- Document results, observations and daily work in a clear and structured way.
- Ensure and promote safety and good laboratory practices in all operations.
- Collaborate closely with researchers and technical experts, occasionally supporting demonstrations or meetings with partners.
- A degree in laboratory technology, process technology, materials technology or another relevant applied science field.
- Hands-on experience in laboratory or pilot-scale work, such as operating equipment, preparing experiments or handling materials and samples. Previous experience working with biomass and/or biomaterials is preferred.
- Ability to follow procedures, carry out practical tasks independently and work safely in laboratory and piloting environments.
- Familiarity with laboratory practices, safety requirements and basic quality procedures.
- Basic computer skills (Office); ability to follow work instructions, document experimental results, and use database tools when needed.
- Good collaboration and communication skills, and ability to work smoothly with researchers and other team members.
- Willingness to interact with internal or external partners when needed.
- Proficiency in Finnish and English.
A practical, hands-on and solution-oriented team player who enjoys working with equipment, materials and experimental setups. You approach tasks with care, curiosity and a willingness to learn new methods and tools. You collaborate smoothly with researchers and other experts, communicate clearly in everyday situations and adapt well to changing project needs. A structured way of working, attention to safety and an enthusiastic attitude toward developing your skills will help you succeed in this role.
With VTT, you'll enjoy:- Visionary work in technology. We offer positions at the cutting-edge of technology and engineering from next generation microelectronics and quantum technology to automation and robotics, energy systems and more. Our research agenda is dedicated to creating sustainable growth by solving systemic and technological challenges, so your work will go towards creating real, positive impact.
- State-of-the-art piloting infrastructure. At VTT, you will have access to advanced research and piloting facilities, including Bioruukki – one of Europe's largest open-access research and pilot centres for biomaterials, bioprocessing and sustainable production.
