Surface Drilling Division within Sandvik Mining is a world leading supplier of surface mining and construction equipment and related services. We are strengthening and developing our Machine Controls team and are now looking for a proactive and future-oriented System Engineer for a permanent position in Tampere, Finland. Our Machine Controls team creates and develops onboard control system solutions and offboard software for our customers. Team provides professional services in areas of software specification, system design and software implementation for Surface Drilling division products. Team is involved in new product projects and responsible for lifecycle maintenance of current products.
Your mission
In this role, you will contribute to shaping our application platform by overseeing the UX/UI development and maintenance of both shared features and core functionalities. You'll be responsible for crafting clear, forward-thinking specifications for new solutions and proactively updating existing ones to meet evolving needs. By gathering insights from customers and internal stakeholders, you'll drive the creation of innovative, common solutions that benefit our entire product suite.
Collaboration is at the heart of this position—you'll work closely with talented system engineers, UX and graphical designers, and both internal and external software developers and testers to bring visionary user experiences to life. Your key responsibilities include:
- Designing and refining UX and UI related features and concepts that set our products apart
- Collecting and prioritizing requirements from customers and team members to ensure our solutions meet real-world needs
- Serving as the primary point of contact for all GUI/UI-related topics in R&D, championing user-centric design
- Coordinating the development of intuitive user interfaces, both graphical and physical, specifically tailored for our surface drill rigs and related equipment, to ensure operators and technicians experience enhanced usability, efficiency, and satisfaction in real-world mining and construction environments.
- Collaborating closely with cross-functional experts to define and optimize hardware requirements for user interfaces

About you and what we find important
To excel in this role, you should bring at least two years of professional experience in automation and control systems, product development, and software engineering. A solid understanding of control systems software for products is highly valued; however, a strong motivation and ability to rapidly acquire new skills and expertise will also be considered. Proven experience in coordinating software development projects and drafting clear, effective feature specifications is regarded as a key asset for success in this position.
You hold a relevant degree (M.Sc. or B.Sc.) in computer science, electronics, automation, or a closely related field. As an individual, you are a self-motivated team player who thrives in collaborative environments. Your strong interpersonal skills enable you to communicate and negotiate effectively. For Finnish speakers, fluency in English is required. For English speakers, familiarity with Finnish is considered an advantage but not required.
