Tampere, Tampere, Finland Amazon Full time €60,000 - €80,000 per year
DESCRIPTION

Are you interested in developing amazing products for end users, improving image quality through comprehensive testing and validation, and having your fingerprint on Amazon Ring cameras? If so, then please read on.

As a System Development Engineer at Amazon Ring, you would be working together with embedded software and hardware teams, IQ engineers, scientists, and various stakeholders on different sites. When you are successful, end users will have Ring cameras to capture every moment with stunning colors and great details, no matter whether it is day or night.

In this work, you will understand how an image is created from sensor to full color image and how related peripherals can help the camera create a perfect video stream. You will design and implement comprehensive test systems, develop sophisticated automated test suites, and optimize the integration of software algorithms with hardware capabilities, ensuring our cameras deliver exceptional performance in various lighting conditions and environments.

This work requires strong skills in test automation and image quality validation - both objective measurements in laboratory environments and subjective assessments in real-world scenarios - and more than that, it requires the capability to innovate test solutions that work in a given hardware setup. It is essential to have a camera system understanding and be able to learn from others. You should have genuine interest in camera technologies and keep adopting the latest tools for testing, automation, and validation.

In this position, you will work with the latest and greatest technologies in the camera and embedded industry. You'll work in state-of-the-art camera laboratories equipped with advanced technology. Building the test architecture for the future while delivering devices to the market is the key to success in the long run.

At Ring, an Amazon company, you'll contribute to the evolution of over 50 device models sold globally. Our product range includes video doorbells, indoor and outdoor cameras, alarm systems and sensors, all designed to enhance home and personal security.

In Tampere, we have experts in most areas sitting in the very same office; you can just go and visit them and maybe sketch your idea on paper or whiteboard. The expert network at Amazon Ring is also there to ensure success in your work.

If you feel this is for you, please apply now.

Key job responsibilities

As a System Development Engineer, your output is test systems and automation that validate millions of devices, so strong analytical and programming skills are essential. You need to be able to evaluate all camera hardware capabilities to create comprehensive test coverage. This means that you need to be familiar with image processing like 3A, demosaic, noise reduction, and also how different parts in the image system interact with each other.

There is always something that can be improved in testing and validation, your task is to figure out how to do it - this requires skills to innovate solutions and communicate with others. A solution can be developing a new automated test suite, implementing machine learning algorithms to enhance test case generation, creating robust scalable test architectures, refactoring test code or creating something totally new; it is essential that whatever you do it serves a purpose.

You will design and implement comprehensive test systems for Ring's diverse range of smart home security products. This involves creating robust, scalable architectures for test environments that can adapt to new product lines and technologies. You'll develop sophisticated automated test suites to ensure product quality across all stages of development, and create and maintain scripts for regression testing, performance testing, and stress testing. To push the boundaries of test automation, you'll implement machine learning algorithms to enhance automated test case generation and execution, and develop software solutions to automate laboratory processes and increase overall efficiency.

Collaboration is central to this role. You'll work closely with software development teams to understand new feature requirements and specifications, then develop test plans and strategies for new features, ensuring comprehensive coverage. You'll collaborate on the implementation of diagnostics and debugging tools to aid in feature development, and provide valuable feedback to software engineers based on test results and performance metrics. Working with quality assurance teams, you'll integrate automated tests into the overall quality control process.

If you have experience in camera image processing, camera technologies like sensors, optics, ALS and LEDs, or programming skills in C/C++/Python, please do mention them in your resume.

You will work with hardware and prototype devices on Amazon Tampere premises. However we have our flexible culture where eventually results matter.

A day in the life

A new device arrives, and you need to design and implement a comprehensive test plan to validate image quality across various lighting conditions and environments.

The video has auto exposure issues in challenging lighting scenarios. You will develop automated tests to reproduce the issue consistently, work with imaging experts to root-cause it, and validate the improved control algorithm implementation. The IQ team praises the improved test coverage.

You have innovated a new approach to automate laboratory processes while analyzing test results. Your manager is also excited, frees up your time, gets you access to advanced test equipment, and collaborates with you on how to scale the solution across the product line.
