Doctoral Researcher in Sustainability in Packaging

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Doctoral Researcher to join our team at Aalto University. The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team working on the Science Translation Framework for Sustainable Bioproducts Innovation (SciSustain) project, funded by Business Finland (BF). This project aims to develop sustainable bioproduct innovations by translating scientific findings into practical solutions.
The Doctoral Researcher will be responsible for helping postdoctoral researchers, principal investigators, and experts in delivering scientific evidence to project stakeholders, reporting to BF, and gathering data from literature and industry partners to assess the sustainability of proposed concepts. The position requires excellent written and oral communication skills in English, as well as knowledge of mass and energy balance software, and experience with conducting deskwork, such as process modeling and LCA.
Your Responsibilities and Goals- Develop mentoring skills by supporting master thesis workers.
- Lead and write peer-reviewed articles for high-impact journals.
- Participate in events, give oral presentations, and support teaching and workshops.
- Increase your employability by demonstrating leadership and excellence in measuring the sustainability of applied research solutions.
The Doctoral Researcher will work closely with the project team to deliver high-quality research outputs and contribute to the development of sustainable bioproduct innovations. The position is available immediately, and the starting salary is approximately 3000 EUR/month.

Our Bio2 department is one of the three departments in the School of Chemical Engineering, with an internationally leading reputation in basic and applied research for the development of advanced materials from natural resources.
Your Experience and AmbitionsThe ideal candidate will have:
- Recently obtained an MSc in chemical engineering, environmental engineering, pulp and paper technology, biorefining, forest products, or similar.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
- Knowledge of mass and energy balance software.
- Experience with conducting deskwork, such as process modeling and LCA.
- Taken Life cycle assessment courses.
- Understanding of the packaging value chain.
- Background on alternative to plastics, such as cellulosic films.
- Interest in understanding circularity principles.
Nice to have:
- Experience in writing papers.
- Experience with conducting techno-economic analysis.
- Experience with conducting LCA.
