Doctoral Researcher in Interdisciplinary Environmental Sciences

The Faculty of Science invites applications for a DOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN INTERDISCIPLINARY ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES starting from August 2025 or as agreed. The Doctoral Researcher will be offered a fully funded contract of up to 4 years.

About the position

The doctoral researcher position involves integrating traditional and novel digital data sources and contributing to the development of innovative approaches in conservation science to investigate human-nature interactions. The position is part of the BIOBANG project at the University of Helsinki, which explores the relationships between indirect and direct drivers of biodiversity loss and investigates what conservation actions hold the potential for transformative changes in human-nature relationships.

Working as a doctoral researcher

The doctoral researcher is expected to:

  • Advance the BIOBANG project's objectives as part of a dynamic interdisciplinary team.
  • Conduct doctoral studies and research leading to a completed PhD thesis within 4 years.
  • Actively participate in the broader activities of the research group, including supervision of students and contributions to teaching.
  • Publish research findings and contribute to outreach activities related to the project's objectives.

The person we are looking for

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic doctoral researcher with:

  • A master's degree (or equivalent) in conservation science, ecology, geography, or other relevant fields.
  • Previous experience with digital data analysis, modelling, machine learning or systematic literature reviews would be beneficial but not strictly required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • A strong interest in interdisciplinary research, particularly in human-nature interactions and the use of digital data and methods in conservation science.
